Gold filled metal is a very durable, layered product made by bonding surface layers of gold to a supporting layer of brass or other metal, with heat and pressure. 

The end result has a surface layer of gold which is very thick compared to gold plated materials. Gold filled is sometimes known as 'rolled gold'.  People with allergies, who can tolerate gold,  can also try gold filled as a less expensive, quality option.
